Once home to nutmeg, pepper and fruit orchards, Orchard, as it’s known by locals, is now home to Singapore’s version of London’s Oxford Street or New York’s 5th Avenue. If you’re in need of some retail therapy, a few hours browsing air-conditioned stores or escaping the rain, this is the place to come. From high-end designer boutiques to mainstream chains, there’s something for everyone.

Tips

  • There is usually a lot going on down Orchard at Christmastime. Take in the surreal feeling of having Christmas decorations hanging from tropical trees in 30-degree heat.
  • During the Singapore Grand prix, there are often F1 events with the drivers in the shopping malls so keep your eyes peeled for Lewis Hamilton!
  • If you’re walking to the top of Orchard (northwest), then combine with a trip to the Botanic Garden, if you’re going the other way, then consider combining with a trip to the National Museum of Singapore or Raffles, which is a bit further on.

Highlights

The National Museum of Singapore

See our other entry on this – it deserves its own spot! The museum is just off of Orchard Road.

The Istana

Located near the end of Orchard, close to Plaza Singapura, the Istana is the official residence and office of the President of Singapore. The name means "palace" in Malay and is where the President greets state guests. The house and grounds are open to the public on a selected number of public holidays each year.

Emerald Hill

If you’re there in the evening, Emerald Hill is located just off of Orchard; a small road with bars and eateries in old shophouses.

Tang Plaza shopping mall

Easily accessible from Orchard MRT, this was the first store established on Orchard – it’s Singaporean too!

ION Orchard shopping mall

Connected directly to Orchard MRT station. Contains a number of designer stores such as Prada, Armani and Dior, as well as mainstream stores such as Zara. Grab some xiao long bao (steamed buns) from Paradise Dynasty to keep your energy levels up for shopping! There is also a food court in the basement.

Ngee Ann City shopping mall

High end shopping centre with a great food court in the basement. Also incorporates Takashimaya – who doesn’t love a Japanese department store?!
